Here's the only clip I have of my 18 watt Twinmaster. It's an older one, over a Guitar Center backing track. Nothing special, really. Just checking Mic levels, etc. at a session.

I'm playing an alder bodied Warmoth soloist with Pearly Gates PUs, through the low gain input of the TM.

    Is anybody out there?

I see that people are looking at the posts. But, I don't see anyone adding anything to the discussion.

Nice clip.  Just found this forum.  I recently picked up an older Twinmaster head from '96.  I LOVE the sound, but am trying to come to grips with its volume It's the first el84 amp I've owned.  As I get the master up in the high gain input it gets very compressed sounding...is this a function of the el84 tubes or the twinmaster circuit (or a combination).  I was thinking of trying a few different types of tubes to lessen the compression just a bit.  It's a great sounding amp.

    Hey!

   They are loud!

To minimize compression, you might try playing through the low gain channel, or swapping the V1 Preamp tube. Maybe a 12AU7, or 12AT7?

But yeah, EL-84s can be compressed sounding, compared to 6L6's, or even 6V6's.

I have also found a "Timmy" pedal can help to maintain some of the "cranked amp", or "on the verge of breakup" feel, at a lower volume.

So, how do you like the feel of the Twinmaster? I find mine to be really responsive to my touch. I can get a wealth of tones by using my guitar's volume and tone controls. And it takes pedals really well, too.

I think I will try fiddling with the preamp tubes just a bit.  I love the feel of the amp...in fact that's what's frustrating.  I've used my airbrake with it as well as a Tim in front of it and while they both sound OK something is missing from each especially in the feel of the amp.  It just sounds so great when it gets opened up a bit on its own.

I'd love to hear your findings. I have wondered about trying a 12AU7 or 12AT7 in the preamp. Also, what different brands of power tubes would do.
