I have played my stock 2001 Verbmaster 18 1x12 combo directly against the 10th Anniversary Twinmaster at the Budda Headquarters, albeit at low, undistorted volumes (so as not to disturb their neighbors). They were remarkably similar, but the Twin was a little tighter and a little brighter, almost as if the speaker in it was less broken in than mine. The Twin also had a little more bottom and was a little less compressed and a bit more punchy. Of course the Verbmaster has the reverb when desired. I've also compared my Verbmaster directly against a 1996 Twinmaster head with 1x12 Budda cabinet (Phat 12 loaded) as well as plugging the Twin head into my Verbmaster's Phat 12. I also used the same tubes for each amp (minus the tubes used for reverb that are otherwise used in the Verbmaster). The old Twinmaster had a notably more aggressive tone with a brighter attack, harmonically richer sound. It was more touch-sensitive and had more gain than the Verbmaster through both inputs. The bass was tighter and the amp had an overall more Marshally voicing. The Verbmaster had a smoother, but less articulate tone overall. Almost as if the reverb circuit is sucking tone. Since the reverb is not truly bypass-able and the mains transformer is the same as on the Twin (but needs to supply voltage to two additional preamp tubes) the tone would likely be different anyway. |
